With Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness set to premier in May, let’s take a look at how well previous films from the Marvel cinematic universe have done. Is there a reason why some films do better than others? There can be many reasons why a film does well when it premiers. Some might say Marvel’s fanbase has a lot to do with it. Maybe it’s the experience Marvel creates for its viewers by having a large budget that allows them to include more actors, better CGI, or even market a larger audience.

When determining if a movie has done well financially, some say that the movie has to make TWICE its production budget in the worldwide box office. That’s when the production company finally starts to make money. This is why a big Marvel movie such as Black Widow, which cost 200 million and made $379,631,351 worldwide, is considered a "flop." It can be hard to determine a film’s financial success. Sometimes a film is judged by the industry or audience expectations, rather than its budget.

When looking at this graph you can see where all the Marvel films fall based on their worldwide revenue and budget. Marvel’s highest grossing films include all of the Avengers films and the recent highly anticipated Spider-Man: No Way Home film. Marvel’s most common budget has been $200 million, which Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is said to have had as well. Seeing how well some of those films have done and how much it’s being talked about, we can imagine how much revenue this new film will bring Marvel.

This graph shows how well films are rated based on their production company. Marvel films have been produced by different companies, but the most popular blockbusters have come from Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. You can see that, with the exception of Deadpool 2, 20th Century Fox has not produced films from the X-Men universe that have been rated that well. On the other hand, Sony Pictures has focused on the Spider-Man universe and has had its success with the recent Spider-Man trilogy. Some may argue that the success of the Spider-Man films have been thanks to Disney working with Sony to produce these films.

With Marvel starting “Phase Four” of their cinematic universe, there are many films that are being produced and widely talked about. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is said to contain the largest amount of Marvel characters in a film and many fans are excited to see it. The ticket sales prove how long awaited it has been--beating The Batman and having the best ticket sales in 2022. Based on the talk surrounding the film and its budget, I think this film will definitely pass the $1 billion mark. Making it one of Marvel’s highest grossing films. If you are interested in watching Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the film is set to premier on May 6 at a local movie theater near you. It follows Doctor Strange as he casts a forbidden spell that opens a portal to the multiverse. It quickly becomes a threat and is forced to find a way to fix it.
